‘One Step’ emerged after contemplating the tale ‘The Handless Maiden’ from classic feminist novel Women Who Run With The Wolves by Clarisa Pinkola Estés. ‘The Handless Maiden’ brings to light the power of the exiled woman-- the journey she endures and the strength she must find within herself to continue. Along the way she encounters the Devil himself, who reminded Isadoré of a personified version of her own thoughts. This character lives within us all-- the natural predator of our psyche which attempts to cut us off from the world and from our soul.
lyrics
One Step
You did your work
Left no trace
Now I’m here with open wounds its a disgrace
You dragged my soul
Over broken glass
Starry eyes are blinking
In the dark
Until you do it
And you do it so well and you know it
Cause you know me too well
You keep doing it
You keep doing it to me
Always one step
One step ahead of me
One step ahead of me
You picture fades
Fom my mind
Though the feeling doesn’t leave in time
I’m alone with my thoughts
When you come by
Tapping in like its an open invite
Until you do it
And you do it so well
And you know it
Cause you know me too well
You keep doing it
You keep doing it to me
Always one step
One step ahead of me
One step ahead of me
I see you hiding in the cracks of my mind
I know your kind
You like to wait til’ I’m down
Then you come around
Til’ you do it
And you do it so well
And you know it
Cause you know me too well
You keep doing it
You keep doing it to me
Always one step
One step ahead of me
One step ahead of me
